What Makes Kids Want to Read?

Let's All Add Great Ideas We've Created That Work To:

  • Motivate kids to read.

Ask yourself, "Why do I read what I read?" There are many different reasons people read what they do. As educators, we need to introduce and offer as many types of reading material as possible to tap into the interests of many different students. Because research shows that the more students read, the better they read, we want to get them interested in what they are reading, so they will read more.

I firmly believe that students will benefit from reading texts that are NOT always the highest level of literature. If "Goosebumps" is the series they are interested in reading, we should offer as many of those books as we can to get them flying through them to go onto the next book or next series that captures their imagination. Should we make sure we also offer and promote quality literature? Of course, but comic books and video game cheat code books can draw the attention of reluctant readers in ways that other literature may not.

Offer plenty of non-fiction books as well as the fiction stories. Kids like to read about things that are "real."

By giving students a place to share the books they have read and really enjoyed, other students are drawn to read the same books. They look forward to what they get to read next with more excitement then just quickly grabbing anything off the library stacks to have something to check out.

Encourage kids to read the pictures, if the words are too hard for them. They can still benefit from encyclopedia entries and other non-fiction books that way.

Let kids partner read with stronger readers that are willing to do the reading aloud for both of them, to meet the need of reading a more interesting book without actually being at that reading level.

Reading along with books on tape can also give students more interesting books to read, even if they can not read the book independently yet.
